Tooling for Plastics Injection Molding.

Plastic Injection Molds Injection molds, or mold tooling, are the formed halves that come together in the injection molding machine to be filled with molten plastic and produce the plastic parts in their image. (

Plastic resin enters the mould through a sprue or gate in the injection mould; the sprue bushing is to seal tightly against the nozzle of the injection barrel of the moulding machine and to allow molten plastic to flow from the barrel into the mould, also known as the cavity. [11] : 141 The sprue bushing directs the molten plastic to the cavity images through channels that are machined into the faces of the A and B plates. (  

These channels allow plastic to run along them, so they are referred to as runners.  The molten plastic flows through the runner and enters one or more specialised gates and into the cavity. Geometry to form the desired part. (  The front half of the mold, called the mold cavity, is mounted to a stationary platen and aligns with the nozzle of the injection unit. (

Technology advanced the process, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining became the predominant method of making complex molds, with more accurate details, and in less time than the traditional method. ( Conversely, if wall thickness is any thinner than 1mm or so you might experience trouble filling the mold tool (resulting in gaps or short shots). (

How Does Plastic Injection Molding Work?  

The thermoplastic injection molding process at Protolabs is a standard process involving an aluminum mold with no heating or cooling lines running through it, which means cycle times are a bit longer. It allows our molders to monitor fill pressure, cosmetic concerns, and the basic quality of the parts. (

Resin pellets are loaded into a barrel where they will eventually be melted, compressed, and injected into the mold’s runner system. Hot resin is shot into the mold cavity through the gates and the part is molded. Ejector pins facilitate removal of the part from the mold where it falls into a loading bin. When the run is complete, parts (or the initial sample run) are boxed and shipped shortly thereafter. (

Why Use Injection Molding: 

 The principal advantage of injection molding is the ability to scale production en masse. Once the initial costs have been paid the price per unit during injection molded manufacturing is extremely low. The price also tends to drop drastically as more parts are produced.
